Bill McGann has had his life inextricably tied up with bicycles for about as long as he can remember. His first date with his wife Carol was a bike ride. A former a Category 1 racer, he has been a contributor to several cycling magazines, is the author of the 2-volume The Story of the Tour de France and is widely acknowledged as an expert on road bikes and cycling history. Since his father gave him a small 1-speed English lightweight bicycle when he was 5 years old Bill has been in love with everything about bikes.
Being too young to know better, he opened the cleverly named “Bill’s Bike Shop” in 1974. Distressed to find that running the bike shop amounted to real work, he sold the business in 1987.
Carol, a former college biology instructor is also an accomplished rider, having cycle-toured extensively. Together they started Torelli Imports in 1981, a firm specializing in high-performance cycle equipment. The McGann’s sold the firm in 2007 and moved to the Ozarks.
Considered by most to be a harmless drudge, he now spends his time working on a history of the Giro d’Italia, publishing Bike Race Info, riding and sending crank e-mails to Padraig.
